The HPAT stands for Health Professions Admissions Test and is the first hurdle in wanting to become a doctor.
The closing date for registration is tomorrow 20th January, so we decided we would help all our young budding doctors out with all the information you need to know before doing the test itself. The fee due for tomorrow is €130 and after this will set you back an extra €70 – so register before silly.
When you register you'll be given a copy of an online practice test e-book. The exam itself will last two and a half hours and is made up of three sections.
1. Logical reasoning and problem-solving
This section will present a small bit of information on a graph and is completely multiple choice. By approaching it as a process of elimination, you'll find your answers easier.
2. Interpersonal understanding

This section is to do with how you understand and think about people. It's done by presenting a scenario or dialogue directly associated with dealing directly with someone.
3. Non-verbal reasoning
This section is the most random of the three. It features patterns or sequences of shapes and is supposed to see if you can understand abstract reasoning and solve problems in non-verbal contexts.
That's a quick summary of what the test is all about, but if there's one thing all medial professionals can agree on, is that you shouldn't give up if you don't pass it the first time. It doesn't always correctly represent you're actually abilities.
