Back To The 50's: The Finest Films From The Fifties

So we're going to go out on a limb and presume no one reading this article was actually around in the 50's. Everything we know of the decade was brought to us via the silver screen. Films have told us that it was a period of fun, fads, and fashion; an era when people really started to get their groove on. They've allowed us a glimpse into what really was the best decade ever. So here are just a few films that will remind you just how great the 50's really were, courtesy of Zaconey.

Vertigo (1958)

One of Hitchcock's finest films, and often considered one of the best of all time, Vertigo is a tale of romantic obsession brought to life by James Stewart and Kim Novak. Retired policeman John Ferguson suffers from severe acrophobia and becomes deeply enthralled with his friend's wife, leading to a sequence of dire events. A dark tale that draws the audience in, Vertigo showcases the cool, harsh reality of the fifties on screen.

War Of The Worlds (1953)

War of the Worlds delivers on the thrill and paranoia of H.G. Wells' classic novel. Although not an overly pleasant film by any stretch of the imagination, the film showed us the fear of the great unknown, the paranoia and how far we've all really advanced over the years. Because now, of course, we'd all be so much more equipped for an alien invasion....

Back To The Future (1985)

This sci-fi classic drove its way straight into the hearts of everyone everywhere upon its release. The first instalment brought its audience back to the 50's and a world of picket fences, shiny diners and bubblegum lifestyles; a stark contrast from the world Marty, our lead protagonist has just arrived from. Admit it, it made you a little envious of the idealistic lifestyles everyone appeared to lead in the 50's...

Roman Holiday (1953)

Starring the ever graceful Audrey Hepburn, Roman Holiday embodies sunshine, 50's silhouettes, deep, burning passion and European ideals, all in one pretty, romantic 50's style love film. If watching Audrey Hepburn at her very best isn't incentive enough, then the sunkissed, soft 50's view on life should convince you.

Some Like It Hot (1959)

Think of the 50's and what blonde haired bombshell instantly springs to mind? I'm guessing you thought Marilyn Monroe, am I right? Some Like It Hot embodied everything that was sensual and fabulous about the 50's, from the curvy pin-ups to the swaying beats of the incredible music. One thing's for sure, some liked it hot back in 1959....

Pleasantville (1988)

This fantasy-drama-comedy explores the loss of innocence in America in the fifties and more importantly, it touches on the role of women in this time. What begins as an obsession with the era, eventually lands the characters in this bizarre repressed utopia and allows the audience a glimpse of this foreign decade.

Grease (1978)

Possibly the most beloved movie set in the fifties, Grease embraced all of its swing culture, flouncy skirts and slicked back hair. A simple love story set against the backdrop of school drama and instant classic songs, it still evokes a sense of nostalgia and envy at its pastel colour scheme and carefree joy. Go grease lightning...
