9 Myths About Relationships You Need To Stop Believing

Being in love is the most amazing, scary, incredible, confusing, and happy time in your life. The sky seems more blue, the grass looks greener, and everything is just peachy. However, no relationship is necessarily a walk in the park. Each relationship requires hard work, dedication, and love. Sometimes you look at other couples and think they have it so much easier, but you need to remember that every relationship has its issues, no matter how in love they are with each other. Here are 9 relationship myths you should stop believing.

1. A good relationship means you don't have to work at it.

If you and your significant other are true matches for each other, then there shouldn't be any extra work put into the relationship, right? WRONG. Even if you believe you're soul mates, every relationships requires work. You are two flawed human beings, and there is no such thing as a perfect relationship. In reality, putting work into your relationship really proves your love for each other.

2. Jealousy is a sign of true love.

Your partner always wondering where you are and who you're with is not a sign of love, it's a sign of jealousy. Jealousy does not equal love, it equals insecurity. Try to spot the red flags of jealousy in your relationship and talk to each other about why you feel that way. It will open the lines of communication between you two and hopefully allow for less jealously in the future.

3. Couples who never fight are the happiest.

While fighting constantly is never a good sign, lacking arguments isn't a great sign either. Arguments and disagreements are the root of passion, and it's perfectly normal for you both to disagree with each other. The couple that never fights is probably never being truthful with each other. Honesty, even if it leads to an argument, is better than holding back from one another.

4. It's better to not let your significant other know when you're upset.

Bottling up your emotions is never healthy. You may think keeping your feelings to yourself is the easiest option, but in the long-run it's going to hurt your relationship. You'll start feeling resentment towards each other and that will slowly kill things. Be upfront and honest with each other, and you'll never have regrets.

5. Opposites attract.

I'm not saying that opposites attracting isn't true, but you definitely need to have some similarities. If you're in a relationship with someone you have zero in common with, then where's the fun and the discussion? Opposite characteristics aren't a bad thing, but every relationship needs similar interests.

6. A great relationship has little to do with sex.

A great relationship has a lot to do with sex. Sex has so many layers - it develops your intimacy, communication, and love for each other, and it really is a vital factor in growing your relationship.

7. There is always a right and a wrong.

Sometimes, neither of you are right or wrong. Opinions exist (shocker!), and everyone is entitled to them. At the end of the day, figuring out who was right or wrong in every situation is not as important as learning from one another, and accepting the other's opinion as their own.

8. What your partner doesn't know won't hurt them.

Keeping secrets from one another is toxic. You may think you're doing each other a favor by keeping secrets that might hurt one of you, but in reality open communication is more important. Hurting one another is inevitable, what's more important is how you handle that situation.

9. It's important that you spend all of your free time with each other.

Spending all your free time with each other neglects your other relationships that are equally important. You are not each other's lives! You must have a life outside of one another. Your friends were there before your significant other, and they'll be there after so don't neglect them.
