Dead Rising 3 is the zombie game I always hoped the series would become back when the first Dead Rising was unveiled for the Xbox 360.  With a large city to explore and enough hardware horsepower to display several hundred zombies onscreen, this is the zombie apocalypse fans have always wanted. I have never seen this many zombies on screen at once in any game. Up close, there are enough distinct character models that I didn’t really feel like I was killing the same one 27,000 times, and I love the many ways in which they fall apart. You can chop them in half (horizontally or vertically!) blow off limbs and heads, and even take out chunks of torso. They put on quite a show.

I love how most of Dead Rising 3’s collectibles are blueprints for crafting new weaponry instead of meaningless achievement padding. The recipes get so creative, like turning microwaves into laser beams, strapping a car battery to a mask of Street Fighter’s Blanka to create area-of-effect electricity attacks, and yes, turning a flashlight into a full-on lightsaber. There’s also a character upgrade system that’s extensive and well done, with most options on the menu providing real benefits that you can feel right away instead of minor stat boosts.

The gameplay has been streamlined quite a bit to make the main attraction - killing zeds in awesome ways - easier and more fun than ever.  I also like the relaxed time limits and new way helping survivors is handled.  Best of all, in spite of all of the changes, it still has that quirky and dark Dead Rising humour at its core. Everything about the game raises the bar considerably compared to its predecessors; it's a more accessible adventure, while Nightmare Mode allows seasoned zombie killers to sink their teeth into something more challenging. Dead Rising 3 delivers everything fans of the series would want from a next-generation entry of the franchise, while stunning newcomers with massive hordes of zombies.   Dead Rising 3 is awesome.

Massive thumbs up!
