Oscar Nominations Cap Excellent Year For Irish Actors

The big Irish news coming out of the Oscar nominations which were just announced, is that Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for Best Actress in a Lead Role for her role as the title character in Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird.

This is the 3rd Academy Award nomination for Ronan who is still only 23, a fantastic achievement. She was previously nominated for Atonement and Brooklyn so, hopefully third time will be a charm for the Carlow actress.

Martin McDonagh was surprisingly snubbed for a Best Director nomination, having just won the Golden Globe for the same achievement. However he is nominated as a Producer for Best Picture and also for Best Original Screenplay. His film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri is nominated for seven awards overall.

Daniel Day-Lewis, who has the record for the most wins for Best Actor (3) has been nominated for his sixth Oscar for his role in Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread, which Day-Lewis has said will be his final film as an actor.

In further Irish interest, The Bread Winner, directed by Cork's Nora Twomey and produced by Cartoon Saloon was nominated for Best Animated Feature.

In other Oscar news Greta Gerwig crazily became only the 5th woman ever to be nominated for Best Director for her film Lady Bird. History has been made by two other ladies also, Meryl Streep has received her 21st Oscar nomination for the role in The Post, furthering her record as the most nominated actor ever and Mudbound cinematographer Rachel Morrison becomes the first female cinematographer in the 90 year history to be nominated.
