7 Reasons To Watch Okja On Netflix This Weekend

You might have difficulty pronouncing the films name but Okja is a must see for anyone with a Netflix subscription.

Okja seems like a childrens classic on the surface but it's an adults film through and through. Okja is a "super pig" that is given to Mija, the little girl who's the film's hero, and her grandparents for ten years by a corporation.

The corporation want to discover how to breed the best pigs possible for human consumption. Okja is chosen as the best pig and is taken away. has to go on a terrifying adventure to bring her back.

The film has been getting rave reviews and averaging at 7.5/10 on IMDB and now we know why.

Here are 7 reasons why you need to watch what looks set to be a future classic:

It's being called the first "great" Netflix movie

Although it's a fun film for viewers to watch Okja being on Netflix says a lot of things.

The film's director, Boong Joon-Ho was given a serious amount of creative freedom which means that it could be time for the dwindling film industry to allow Hollywood directors the same.

The film was also made from our monthly subscription costs which means we're paying for new creative content.

Tilda Swinton is the ultimate villain in Okja

If you've never seen Tilda Swinton play a villain then you haven't lived. Remember her as the Ice Queen in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe? Swinton plays Lucy Mirando, the powerful CEO of the Mirando Corporation looking to make a profit off of Okja.

People are actually paying money to see it in the cinema

Fans of Okja's director Boong Joon -ho, who directed Snowpiercer (2013), are seeing the film in cinemas around the world. Fans told Indiewire they loved being able to see Okja come to life on the big screen and didn't want to subscribe to Netflix.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays an oddball Zoologist

In a role that has fans confused and critics questioning his acting, Gyllenhaal delivers a quirky Johnny Depp like character that we kind of enjoyed.

The film received a four-minute standing ovation

The film premiered at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and was met with boos when the Netflix logo appeared on the big screen. By the time the titles rolled around, the crowd burst into a four-minute standing ovation.

Glen from The Walking Dead is in it!

Steven Yeun plays K an animal rights activist who tries to help Okja. It'll be one of his first appearances since ending his contract with ABC's The Walking Dead.

Finally...Okja is the cutest

The "super pig" looks like a baby hippo, piglet and elephant mashed into one supersized side kick. Where can we get one for keeps?
