Netflix Announce A Magical New Animated Roald Dahl Series

Even though most of his famous stories were written over thirty years ago, today Roald Dahl's books remain a staple for young children across the globe. Growing up in the '90s movies and books like Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach were a constant fixture in every household.

Now Netflix is releasing their own extended animated series that focus on the tales of Dahl. The animated series will be a treat for older and younger audiences to enjoy as the streaming service will be hiring the best creative and writing teams to reimagine the classic tales.

Netflix intends to remain true to the source material but will build a universe around the Roald Dahl stories. Felicity Dahl, Roald Dahl's widow, wants as many children as possible to experience the wonderful tales of Dahl:

Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl’s stories.

This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled.

The list of titles included in the deal between the Roald Dahl Story Company and Netflix are:

  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
  • Matilda
  • The BFG
  • The Twits
  • Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator
  • George’s Marvellous Medicine
  • Boy: Tales of Childhood
  • Going Solo
  • The Enormous Crocodile
  • The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me
  • Henry Sugar
  • Billy and the Minpins
  • The Magic Finger
  • Esio Trot
  • Dirty Beasts
  • Rhyme Stew

It's estimated that Dahl has sold over 200 million copies of his books and his stories are available in 58 languages.

Production is set to commence on for the Netflix Roald Dahl animated series in 2019.
