7 Different Types Of Students You See On The Train Home

Going to a city college when you are from the country can be an interesting time. You will come up on the train for the upcoming week with the fear of the impending lectures and wondering how you are going to survive without mammys cooking and cleaning.

However, once the week has ended and you have gone to 50% less lectures than you originally aimed for, and 20% more nights out than you originally hoped for, you can see a very interesting variety of students on your train journey home.

Let's see if any of these ring a bell.

The Homebird

When moving to the city there can be a tendency to stay up for weekends and see the sights, experience some of the fine cuisine, and maybe catch some live music, but not for these students.

Born and bred in the deep country, these students don't want to stay in the city a second longer than they have to. They will be the first ones on and off the train to get back to their sanctuary in rural Ireland as soon as humanly possible.

Usually, you will see them on a late Friday train, but beware should you meet them on a Saturday morning, their time at home is precious to them and if you delay them in any way you will regret it!

The Mammy's Boy/Girl

I think we all know someone who falls under this title.

A student that enjoys college atmosphere and the booming social life that comes with it, you will see these students slowly realise that living alone is not all the craic it is set up to be. Cooking, cleaning and washing are new to them, and without a Mammy to sort out all the things you drop the ball on, it all begins to pile up.

But these are a defiant lot, and will not give up that privilege easily. You will see them getting onto the train with a huge black bag full of dirty clothes and a determination in their eyes. They will show up at their door and Mammy will open it and smile with glee thinking her little baby will alway need her.

The Prodigal Child

They came, they saw and they love it.

When taking the train home for the weekend, once in a blue moon you might happen upon the prodigal child. The student that gets the train home once every 2 months because he has taken the city as his home and has no intention of ever leaving.

These students would not be seen dead in a GAA jersey in public and have actively tried to repress their country accent to seem more "city friendly". Realistically, the only reason these lot go back home at all is to see their dogs and acknowledge to their parents that “Yes, I am alive”.

The One That’s Skint

One thing that can really kick the life out of anyone adjusting to the city life is that everything is so damn expensive. But for some it can hit them harder than others.

These are what we like to call, “Pot Noodle” students. They have been far too lavish in their city lifestyle and buying far too many burritos to ease the headache from the night before.

Essentially, they are tapped for cash and the only solution is to get on a train with their tail between their legs, go home, and get on both knees to explain to their parents how they have managed to spend their month allowance in little over 2 weeks.

The One in the Jersey

There will always be one student going home in a local jersey.

Whether they are going home to play in a crucial relegation battle for their local club or they are looking to attract a fellow train goer through the multi colour pattern of their club jersey, they will always be sporting their colours.

Rural by nature, these folks will never let their roots leave them and they will spend the majority of the train journey discussing with their mate why they should be starting midfield ahead of the coach's son.

The Newly Weds

Meeting the parents can be a tricky business, but for these couple you know they are in for a weekend to remember.

Looking all loved up from their whirlwind romance beginning in Coppers the previous month, you will see this couple heading home to one of their parents houses with the utmost confidence that their other half will impress.

They will sit there for the entire journey listing of the do’s and don'ts for when they are in front of the family, while you will just sit there and snigger at their impending doom.

The Quitter

A rare find, but once you see it you can never forget the image.

Full sized luggage packed, a duvet rolled up and tied to the outside of the bag and wearing as many clothes as possible to lighten the luggage weight.

This is the moment a student has totally given up on their city adventure and will not be returning to college the next week. They will seem pensive and as the journey continues they realise how angry their parents are going to be.

You will hear them on the phone to their parents trying to convince them that this is the right career move for them.
