Babies With Big Heads Are More Successful According To Study

If you’re one of those people that never find a hat that fits you, or wore an adult size hurling helmet when you were 7, or when you were a baby your mother brought you to the doctor to have your head measured, there is good news. The results of a study revealed that babies with big heads are more likely to be successful.

The research carried out by UK Biobank has strongly linked higher intelligence with large head circumferences and brain volume. Researchers surveyed 100,000 British people between the ages of  37 and 73. Participants provided samples of blood, urine, and saliva, while also giving information on their background and lifestyle. Those who took part were also tested on things like reaction time, memory, and educational attainment.

The research findings suggest that anyone with a head circumference of 31.75cm to 35.56cm is smarter. Researcher Dr Sarah Harris says the research “highlights the importance of investigating biological pathways”. These "influence both cognitive function and health-related traits”.

Speaking to Neuroscience News, Professor at Edinburgh University Ian Deary added:

“In addition to there being shared genetic influences between cognitive skills and some physical and mental health states, the study also found that cognitive skills share genetic influences with brain size, body shape and educational attainments.”

So if you endured endless smart comments in primary school about having a big head, now is your time to feel smug.

Who's having the last laugh now.
