East Coast Cyclones Roller Derby

Haven’t heard of Roller Derby yet? Well, it’s just the largest growing female sport in the world, and it’s taking over Ireland!

It’s been described as “Rugby on roller skates”, but there’s no ball in this sport. 10 women (5 from each team) start on an oval track. 1 lady from each team is designated as the ‘Jammer’, it’s her job to score points for her team and she does that by lapping members from the opposite team. Still not getting it? Here’s a quick video to give you a better idea.

Now that you have a better idea about the sport, let’s talk a bit about the East Coast Cyclones. This team is based in the north Wicklow/south Dublin area and are always on the lookout for players, referees and non-skating officials. They also have their first Bout (match) on the 27th July in Greystones (click the link for more info and tickets: www.eastcoastcyclones.com). Live Roller Derby is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before! At first it looks like organised chaos to the untrained eye, but soon you get caught up in that chaos, watching what is a very fast paced, and physical spectacle!

There really nothing like a live Roller Derby Bout, so get yourself, your family and your friends to Greystones on 27th July for 2pm to witness the East Coast Cyclones take to the track for their first (but not last!) time!
