Ah Valentine's Day, retail's wet dream. A day for flowers, chocolates or crying alone under your duvet. But if you are hoping to impress someone today, do it right.

Whether you love it or loath it, here's some tips on making the day special.

Take a shot in the wallet

Buy something nice, even if it's only a bunch of pretty flowers, or something more specific. It's a day made for spending so embrace it.

Avoid lingerie

This is a bit obvious, isn't it? If that's what you're after tonight, be a bit more subtle about it.

Cook a nice meal

Be a chef for the night, it's much more personal than going out to a restaurant. Your significant other will love you for cooking them their favourite meal.

Get physical

No, not that kind of physical, not yet anyway. Go do something outside, skate, a funfair, even just go for a walk. This can be very romantic. Dancing is also a good option.

Get a room

That is exactly as it sounds. Changing things up a bit by getting a hotel room can help you to relax and enjoy the day more.

Chocolate

Mountains and mountains of chocolate. What more could you ask for? Day made.

Take a break

If you're feeling a little more extravagant and have the money you could go away for the big day. Even just a quiet weekend away in a B&B would be perfect. Road trip for two, anyone?

Stay in

Probably the best one of all, just chill out at home together on the couch, or even better spend the entire day in bed.
