Being 22 In Ireland v America: The Differences

As an American living in Ireland, I'd say I've had the best of both worlds. There's something distinctly different about Irish life from American life, and being 22 is no exception to this. Honestly, it's like two different worlds.

1. Dating

America

Going on a date means getting properly dressed up and heading out for a fancy dinner. Maybe a kiss at the end of the night. Maybe.

Ireland

Head to the pub for a casual pint, probably shift each other later on. The usual.

2. Flirting

America

Really, really blunt and obvious.

Ireland

A lot of slagging and talking.

3. Drinking

America

Go out for maybe two drinks with co-workers before tucking in for the night, waking up with no hangover.

Ireland

Get absolutely locked after work, wake up the next morning wanting. TO. DIE.

4. Nights Out

America

Go out around 6pm and head home by 1am. Possibly end up at a club where you can dance.

Ireland

You definitely don't go out until at least 9pm, and that's early. You're probably out til at least half 3, if not later, and yes, you ended up in Copper's and Supermac's after.

6. College

America

You've just graduated college and amassed debt that is literally going to take until you're 70 years old to pay off. There are no jobs in your field available, either.

Ireland

You've just graduated and amassed debt that you'll probably be able to pay off within the next 10 years or less. There's also probably no jobs in your field, though.

7. PDA

America

Literally all over each other, sex on the barstool like.

Ireland

Please don't touch me in public unless we're in Copper's.

8. Driving

America

Driving on the right side of the road, you hate driving since you have to do so much of it.

Ireland

Driving on the left side of the road, you're absolutely petrified of traffic because you've lived in Dublin and used public transport most of your adult life.

9. Food

America

If you live alone...just kidding, you probably still live with your parents. Which means food galore.

Ireland

If you're living alone, probably a bare cupboard with maybe rice in it.

10. Work

America

You hate your life.

Ireland

You hate your life.
