UL Graduate Sick Of Being Mistaken For Controversial Political Namesake

Poor Frances Fitzgerald... no wait, not the disgraced politician that has today resigned form her position as Tánaiste. Frances Fitzgerald is also a UL Journalism and New Media graduate. Frances has the ill fortune of sharing her name with the Fine Gael TD who was accused of interfering in the Maurice McCabe whistleblower case and has now resigned as Tánaiste amid those allegations.

The University of Limerick Frances Fitzgerald however, has been having to deal with the fallout of this incident, being continually tagged on Twitter as the Fine Gael politician.

She did manage to wring some humour out of the situation though:

Speaking to the Limerick Leader, Fitzgerald said that she has grown tired of the constant cases of mistaken identity and how the Tweets were not deleted:

...people weren't deleting the tweets I was tagged in.

They would just apologise and leave it up, it obviously wasn't a huge deal, but I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve had a reply saying something along the lines of 'wrong Frances Fitzgerald.'

Niall Horan (not of One Direction) chipped in with some empathy for Fitzgerald's situation.

The phenomenon of ordinary people being mistaken for celebrities is one that has skyrocketed since Twitter gained popularity. Check out this hilarious thread from Twitter:

They were being mistaken for David Moyes, Andre Villas Boas and Robin Van Persie for those wondering.

Here's a hilarious video about the phenomenon by (not disgraced MMA fighter) Jon Jones:
