New Poll Shows That Irish Rape Culture Is Alive And Well

21% of Irish people think that nonconsensual sex is acceptable in certain situations, according to a poll released by EuroBarometer. This statistic includes 11% of people who think that being drunk or on drugs justifies nonconsensual sex.

EuroBarometer, the public opinion polling body in the European Commission published to mark International Day to End Violence Against Women.

Shockingly there was also a number of Irish people who think that walking home alone, wearing certain clothing, and accompanying someone home with makes nonconsensual intercourse acceptable. On top of the victim-blaming  23% of Irish people feel that women often make up or exaggerate claims of abuse or rape.

Conversely, the majority of Irish people questioned, 97%, said that violence and domestic violence against women is unacceptable, but on this topic 18% of Irish people feel that the victim of domestic violence often brings it upon themselves.

Women's Aid

Women's Aid also released a Femicide Watch study to coincide with the International Day to End Violence Against Women. Their study shows that a women in Ireland is most likely to be killed by a current or former boyfriend or husband. In the past 20 year 131 of 209 women died in their own homes. Overall, 87% of women were killed by a man they knew, be it a current partner, former partner, or male relative.
