'Old Town Road' Has Gone Viral With Thanks To TikTok App

If you haven't downloaded the TikTok app yet, then where have you been. TikTok is a media app for creating and sharing short videos. It has filled the void that vine left in our lives but it is even better. There are 500 million active users on the app globally and it is quickly generating insider memes.

The viral success of the song 'Old Town Road' is just one example to show just how influential TikTok has become. 'Old Town Road' is a song by American rapper Lil Nas X which was released on December 3rd, 2018. The relatively unknown song from the unsigned singer went viral as a result of people using on TikTok. As a result, Lil Nas X has now signed to Columbia Record and his debut hit 'Old Town Road' has gone to No 1. in the billboard charts.

In an interview with Time, Lil Nas X spoke about how the song took on a life of its own on TikTok:

I promoted the song as a meme for months until it caught on to TikTok and it became way bigger. I was pretty familiar with TikTok: I always thought its videos would be ironically hilarious. When I became a trending topic on there, it was a crazy moment for me. A lot of people will try to downplay it, but I saw it as something bigger.

TikTok is a slightly weird yet wonderful place. The videos clips are random and like 'Old Town Road' the music is contagious. You watch a short clip and that song is stuck in your head for the day so it's no wonder the app has become so influential that it can be attributed with sending a song to number one in the Billboard charts.

If you haven't already downloaded TikTok, do it today. Similar to Youtube,  TikTok opens onto a page recommending some of the most popular hashtags and creators. Be warned you can spend hours procrastinating on this app.
