Kerryman Gets Three Weeks Behind Bars For Stealing Five Selection Boxes

A chocolate thief who was caught stealing five Cadburys selection boxes has been put behind bars. Jason Coffey, from the Halting Site, Fossa, came clean about stealing five Cadburys Selection Boxes from a Dealz in Killarney on November 8. Mr Coffey holds 52 previous convictions this one takes the biscuit.

Mr. Coffey's solicitor argued that he had been cooperative and the shop had taken no loss.

The Irish Times reported that Judge James O'Connor said,“If a guy has 54 previous convictions and he has the gall to steal five bars of chocolate..I can understand if he was hungry…Stealing five bars of chocolate … He has no respect for the system!”

The chocolate corsair's solicitor appealed to have the court date set back to January, allowing his client to at least get over Christmas. Judge James O'Connor rejected this appeal, valiantly proclaiming, "I will not put it into January. Somebody has to stand up to this kind of stuff.”

Mr. Coffey was given a choice; "six or seven months" if he deferred the case, or three weeks if he immediately went into custody. Mr. Coffey selected the shorter option and is set to appear before the court again next week.
