The 2017 Irish College Rankings Have Been Revealed... And There's A Few Surprises

When you think of Ireland's best colleges, you probably think of Trinity or UCD right? Well soz, you're wrong. Today the 2017 edition of U-Multirank was revealed and there are quite a few surprises when it comes to Irish college rankings.

Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) and University College Cork (UCC) both received 13 As out of 39 indicators, the most out of all other third-level institutions in Ireland.

The other colleges' scores were:

  • Maynooth: 5 As
  • UCD: 5 As
  • DCU: 11 As
  • Trinity: 6 As
  • UL: 8 As
  • NUIG: 9 As
  • IT Tallaght: 10 As
  • CIT: 12 As
  • IT Tralee: 8 As
  • GMIT: 6 As

U-Multirank is a European Commission initiative that aims to be different to traditional university rankings that rely heavily on research and public citations.

The website ranks 1,500 third-level colleges in 99 countries on 39 indicators such as teaching, research, knowledge transfer, regional engagement, and international orientation.

What's interesting is that institutes of technology performed higher than traditional colleges, so never let anyone tell you they're not a real college ever again.

With that said, a U-Multirank spokesperson said a higher number of As does not make a college better than one with fewer.

“Each university has various strengths and weaknesses, or the data could simply not apply to them, reducing their chances of achieving A scores,” they said.

Interesting stuff, eh lads?
