An Irish University Has Just Pledged To Add 12 Gender-Neutral Bathrooms On Campus

In what is surely some of the best bathroom related news coming out today, the University of Limerick have announced that they are to bring their total of gender-neutral bathrooms on campus to 14.

The university first introduced two gender-neutral bathrooms in 2015 and they were widely lauded for doing so.

The bathrooms will bear a sign reading "Anyone can use this restroom regardless of gender identity or expression". The drive to add the additional twelve bathrooms was led by UL's LGBT society. The outgoing treasurer of the society, Christian Tan, speaking to the Limerick Leader said, "We talked about why it was important and why we needed it, and why the two that were already there were setting a precedent. There is no cost; it’s putting a sign on a bathroom saying to people: ‘You can use this bathroom regardless of your gender identity, and you can feel comfortable in this space’".

The process to get approval for the extra bathrooms to be added took some 18 months. Rather than having new bathrooms built, it is understand that existing bathrooms will be converted into gender-neutral facilities, it was not announced when the bathrooms would be ready.
