UCD Have Elected A New Student Union President

Barry Murphy was elected as UCD student union president yesterday winning 76.8% of the overall vote. Rebecca Hart, the other candidate running in the election received 19% .

2610 votes were cast in total. This was in stark contrast to the referendum that saw Katie Ascough impeached, 6,611 students turning out to oust the then president.

Murphy was elected Campaigns and Communications Officer last March and handed in his resignation to Eoghan MacDomhaill prior to the election. A by-election to replace Murphy as Campaigns and Communications Officer will now have to be held in the upcoming weeks.

In Murphy's speech following the result, he stated that he was "looking forward to getting back to work, restoring the reputation of the union" and also “looking forward to never seeing a polling station again.”
