Residents Object To Trinity Accommodation Plan Due To Student Behaviour

The residents of Dartry are opposing the proposed expansion of the student accommodation at Trinity Hall in Dublin 6 due to late-night rowdiness and drunken behaviour from students.

Currently, the site is host to 995 bedspaces, with TCD hoping to expand the site to cater for a total of 1,283 bedspaces. The expansion would see the demolition of Cunningham House, home to 70 students, and a number of blocks rising to seven storeys in height.

However, a number of local residents are objecting the plans due to the disruptions they already face from the near thousand-strong body of students.

Numerous local residents have made it clear that they won't stand for continued ructions in the residential area. Several people living on Temple Road outlined their objections to the move.

These objections include:

  • Shouting and screaming
  • Urinating in public
  • Drinking in public
  • Smashing glass bottles
  • Walking in the middle of the road
  • Littering
  • Vomiting on public walkways towards Milltown Luas stop

A further 17 residents from Merton Road and Palmerston Road also objected to the plans, citing the concerns mentioned. They added that residents on Temple Road had been forced to install electric gates in their front gardens in order to stop students relieving themselves on the walk to the Luas stop.

A spokeswoman for TCD declined to comment on the contents of the residents’ objections.

She did state: “Dublin has suffered from an acute shortage of student accommodation for many years. This development will go some way to adding to the supply of necessary accommodation in Dublin and provide housing for students from every part of Ireland. This will, in turn, reduce pressure on other parts of the market.”

A decision on TCD's plans is set to be made next month.
