Trinity Officially A Smoke Free Campus From Today, 'National No Smoking Day'

Five years after the idea was first introduced to students and staff members, Trinity Student Union has finally managed to convert the campus to a smoke free campus.

The college will no longer allow smoking, indoors and outdoors, providing a cleaner campus for all. It hasn't been easy for the Student's Union to bring this new initiative into effect, after having previous contradictory stances on the issue, which have changed over the last few years, with more and more students looking to introduce smoke free zones, and eventually a smoke free campus.

From today, National No Smoking Day, Trinity College will become a smoke-free campus, meaning that areas inside and the surrounding area on campus will prohibit smoking, bar three designated smoking zones; around the perimeter of College Park, on the Kinsella podium outside the outside the library and an area at the back of the Buttery.

Speaking to University Times, Dr David McGrath, the Director of the College Health Service said;

“This policy asks our Community to refrain from smoking indoors and outdoors on campus out of consideration for others and to achieve a cleaner campus for all”.

Students have campaigned a few initiatives for a smoke-free campus, including 'No ifs, no Butts' (Very Smart, Trinity) which focused on the environmental effect of cigarette butts.

After five years of a number of student-led campaigns, Trinity finally introduced the smoke-free campus, after a staggering vote in which 71% of students voted for a set of proposals made by Tobacco Free Trinity.

Trinity is the second University in Ireland to become a 'Smoke-free Campus', after UL, University Limerick began their smoke-free life as a campus, last year.
