What The Fudge: Facebook's New Feature Is Creepy AF

Have Facebook gone too far with their new proposed feature?

Facebook have been testing out a new feature that encourages people you don't know to add you as a mate? This creepy new feature is called 'Discover People' and according to TechCrunch, it's about to become available to all Facebook users.

The new feature will appear in the navigation section alongside Friends, Events and Groups. Once you click on the section you'll be asked to update your profile information, like your bio and add a few featured photos. From here people who you're not friends with, can see what events you've clicked going to, you're interested in and have been invited to.

As well as this, you can see people who live in your town or work in the same place as you. A big disclaimer: you can only see people's profiles who you aren't friends with.

Now, why on earth would any sane human use this? It's encouraging creepy friendships and is totally invading people's privacy. It's Facebook trying to be like Tinder and I really can't see it working. Facebook has said it's added the feature to improve communication between its users.

A spokesperson has said:

'Too often, it’s hard to learn more about people around you, whether it is upon starting a new job, joining a new group, deciding if you want to attend an event, or moving to a new place.'

'To make it easier, we’re starting to roll out a new bookmark in the More menu called ‘Discover People’ that can help you discover more about people you have things in common with by browsing through profile cards of people in your community.'

All righty then.
