Things Everybody Should Be Scared Of

Ghost stories, vampires, enclosed spaces, death, thunders and lightning - everybody has their fears and things that scare them most. There are few things that almost everybody is afraid of, but here are some surefire things that will have everyone screaming in terror.

1. Samuel Page.

Samuel Page’s story recalls the mysterious disappearance of the Dublin blacksmith in the 1800s. He lived a normal family life during the day with his wife, Sarah, and their two daughters, Becka and Hannah. However, by night the Page family ran a satanic cult from their basement and when their evil practices were unveiled, their house was burned to the ground by locals! The bodies of Samuel’s wife and two daughters were found, but after weeks of searching for his body, the authorities failed to recover any remains. Page’s spirit is rumoured to have appeared before residents of Dublin City over the past couple of centuries in different forms but always cloaked with his face hidden by a terrifying woven mask. The cult he established is even said to live on in secret today.

2. Vampires.

A Vampire is a mythical being who subsists by feeding on the blood of living creatures. In folklore, undead vampires often visited loved ones and caused mischief or deaths in the neighbourhoods they inhabited when they were alive. They were usually reported as bloated in appearance, and ruddy, purplish, or dark in colour. These characteristics were often attributed to the recent drinking of blood. Gliding and moving silently towards their prey was a common attribute, as well as being invisible in the reflection of mirrors. Vampire superstition in Europe led to what can only be called mass hysteria and in some cases resulted in corpses actually being staked and people being accused of vampirism.

3. Black widow spiders.

A lot of people are afraid of spiders but a rational fear of black widow spiders does exist, and rightfully so. These are a highly dangerous species with venom that can paralyze and kill you. The black widow hysteria of recent months has taken on a whole new toll, with exotic Amazonian spiders also having bitten victims in the UK and Ireland in recent weeks. Keep your eyes peeled for these spiders!

4. Zombies.

The concept has been popularly associated with the Voodoo religion, but plays no part in the faith's formal practices. The sheer number of zombie series and movies is testament to the fear that these undead creatures would generate, and there are actually significant sectors of people out there who believe that a zombie apocalypse is coming, and no we're not talking about The Walking Dead!

5. Great White Sharks.

Movies like Jaws and Deep Blue Sea have certainly helped create this mass panic about these creatures, but I certainly wouldn't want to be in the water with one, no matter who's with me! Of all shark species, the great white shark is responsible for by far the largest number of recorded shark attacks on humans, with 272 documented unprovoked attacks on humans in which the great white shark was identified as of 2012. Those are some terrifying stats! In space nobody can hear you scream? Well nobody can hear you scream under water either!
