Treat 'Em Mean: Does Playing Hard To Get Really Work?

Never initiating contact, responding to texts hours later, saying "let me check my calendar" when asked out- do these things really make us more desirable to the opposite sex? Perhaps. But I think the real question is, should we want them to?

In all my years of experience (read: five), I've never played hard to get. However, I have had boys chase me. Part of the reason I believe guys respond so well to me is because I've ever said "no" to a first date when I've been single. If you have the guts to ask me out (c'mon, asking someone out is scary!), I should give you a chance. (Plus, I'm bound to get free food out of the situation, so it's a win-win.) Most of these dates have been duds and usually result in me saying, "I think we should just be friends" but I think that's what keeps these guys biting at the bit to keep trying.

Being elusive is mysterious and sexy. It's a game you wonder if you can ever figure out. But the thing is, we shouldn't be playing games when it comes to dating and relationships. The world is complex enough without me wondering if you actually like me or not. Instead, you know what we should be trying to be? Bold and honest.

Being completely straightforward and to-the-point may not be as fun, but it's sure to have much more positive, long-lasting results. After all, has a fuckboy ever subjected himself to the kind of vulnerability "Hey, I like you. Wanna go out Saturday night?" requires? No matter how attractive you are, you are bound to encounter some rejection. But the way I see it, if the person you fancy has a problem with your sincerity, you should look for a different person anyway. Being frank means there is no confusion, and no confusion means you are more likely to find a meaningful relationship with someone.

In the end, it is up to you if you play hard to get or not, but I urge you to think about it. If everyone was more honest and up-front about their feelings, wouldn't we spend less time with the people we aren't meant to be with and have more time to find the person we are?
