Alex Mytton Talks Music, Girls And The Irish

Have you been missing Made In Chelsea since Series 8 ended? Yeah, us too. Well, College Times has a little treat to help you cope with the temporary loss of your favourite thing about Mondays. Before Christmas, we chatted to MIC's Alex Mytton ahead of the season finale. He spilled the beans about girls, the show and the release of his new single 'Electric'...

Hi Alex, we've been listening to 'Electric' in the office this morning - sounds great! Music seems to be a passion of yours, has this project been a long time coming or are you just testing the waters?

Hey, festive greetings! Ah nice one thank you, glad you're enjoying it! Yeah music has always been something that really gets me going. Electric has been in the pipeline for a while now, I've just been waiting for a good time release it officially... and what better time than Christmas!! Before Electric, I released a remix of the classic Rhythm of the Night but, afterwards, I wanted to work on an original track so I cracked on with Electric.

How did you get into production? Were you a DJ before? Give us a track that had a big impact on you, a personal favourite or one that inspired you to get busy making big phat beats.

Yeah I was DJing a while before I started on MIC, at first I kinda wanted to keep music and MIC separate, but now I'm embracing the two coming together! A lot of my mates are DJs/producers, so I've always been surrounded by music production. One day I thought "I think I'll have a go at that". Turns out it's a lot of fun and pretty rewarding to play your own tracks out in clubs.

Ah there are so many but Route 94, Shadow Child and the Hot Natured guys all gave me massive inspiration early on. I'd have to say, back in the early days at uni, Disclosure's 'Tenderly' really got me into the genre.

We're all very excited about the MIC season finale, looking forward to a few surprises. What can we expect from you and the gang in tonight's episode?

As always with the Christmas episodes, it's a feisty one. 'Tis the season to stir, it seems with some of the cast. There's something about Christmas and volatility going hand in hand, definitely the drink! We all got dressed up for the party so there's some pretty interesting outfits - or lack thereof with some of the guys. Tonight's episode is pretty big for me (and for once it doesn't involve me being a bas*#rd) as Electric is actually being played on the show during the Christmas party scene, so I'm pretty excited to have it go out on such a big platform.

So you were in New York for about 5 minutes this summer... Did you enjoy yourself?

Impact player... turn up, cause shit and leave. Well, I mean, the movies were pretty decent on the plane so yeah I enjoyed myself! Made it back just in time for my birthday, thankfully!

Spencer has made big claims about being well-behaved for his new girlfriend, but now it's your turn to be the bad influence on him... Do you think he's changed or is it only a matter of time before he Spencers it?

You'll have to tune in tonight to see whether Spenny has gone and Spencer'd it. I must say he has been well behaved and I do believe us blokes are capable of change, but who knows! Only time will tell! I am also in the same situation vis-a-vis having a girlfriend, so I guess I should have faith!

We hear you've recently been dating a Dublin girl. What is it about Irish girls that makes them so attractive?

Well, I mean the accent is pretty damn great, not gonna lie! She's pretty fiery and doesn't take any funny business. She keeps me in order which is very much needed! Ha. Gotta say, I've been spending a bit of time over in the north of Ireland and Dublin - everyone's bloody nice and knows have to have fun! A lot of love for the Irish!!

It must be crazy having to deal with the sudden fame that comes with a show like MIC. How has it changed you?

To be honest with you, I don't really view it as fame. It kinda feels like a bubble, but in terms of changing me? I'd say not much other than the fact I seem to have a few more mates on social media.

Will you be returning to MIC next season? Any big plans for the near future?

Yeah as it stands I'll be returning for the next series, it's gonna be a big one! I'm hoping to incorporate more of the music side of things into the show if possible, which will be pretty decent as it would marry the two main things going on in my life. I'm also hoping to release some new material next year, along with touring, so I'm hoping 2015 will be a fun one... albeit not for the bladder!! (editor's note: I think you mean the liver?)

What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self and do you have any wisdom you'd like to share with our student readers?

I feel I may have actually been wiser age 18 or, if not, I'm not sure ageing has actually granted me any more wisdom, as I'm sure some people may have witnessed on the show ha. In terms of imparting wisdom - gonna get a bit cheesy on you now - just that you should say yes to things (ok, not all things!) as you never know where it can get you. Better to go for it than let opportunities pass you by.

Finally, your hair. Are you serious about this quiff?

Do you know what, I've been so deadly serious about the quiff since I was about 10, when I first discovered my Dad's Brylcreem. I used the whole pot one morning before school, what a great day! I was looking smooth... or maybe not ha. But recently, I happened to watch Jimmy Neutron and realised the parallels were uncanny, so I've decided to let him have it (the quiff) and tone it down a few notches... or rather inches.

Any New Year's resolutions?

I'd love to reel out a list of resolutions to you and feel all self-righteous but, realistically, nothing's gonna change, so I'm just gonna go with a solid "nope."
