Asshole Or Genius? Jim Carrey Blurs The Lines In New Must Watch Netflix Doc

Jim Carrey was/is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Throughout his career he has morphed from rubber faced stand up, to comedy behemoth to indie darling and back again.

One of his lesser known movies is the subject of a new Netflix documentary called 'Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond'. In 1999 'Man On The Moon', where Carrey played late eccentric comedian Andy Kaufman, and behind the scenes footage provides the meat of the documentary.

Kaufman was renowned for his anarchic, anti-comedy. He wrestled women, refused to say his lines on air, did bizarre routines where the line between art and comedy were very much blurred.

Carrey disappeared during the filming of the movie, completely 'becoming' Kaufman for the entirety of the shoot. This meant that filming became increasingly difficult as Carrey's erratic behaviour upset crew as well as cast as he tried to act like he thought Kaufman would in every aspect of his day to day life.

Such was Carrey's obtuseness during filming that the behind the scenes footage that makes up the crux of this documentary was held back from being released by the studio, because they didn't want the public to think that Carrey was an 'asshole'.

What transpires during the course of the hour and thirty minute long doc is a fascinating insight into both Andy Kaufman and Jim Carrey as well as the acting process as a whole.

The footage shows increasingly surreal moments take place from Carrey being beaten up by Kaufman's former friend, wrestler Jerry Lawler on the set of the film, meeting Kaufman's actual father totally in character to being picked up by two stage hands and being carried to set because of his refusal to get up.

The film is a must see for fans of Carrey and Kaufman alike but also for anyone with an interest in acting and the intense method acting that Carrey utilises when playing Kaufman is genuinely remarkable.
