There's some very sad news tonight from RTE as legendary broadcaster Gay Byrne revealed on air this evening that he believes he has cancer. Byrne announced the news in the most straightforward way imaginable - he mentioned it casually at the tail end of his two-hour Lyric FM show, as if it was really no big deal. You can hear the audio below, which is clipped unfortunately because Byrne's two hour slot ended just as he announced the news.
He would add "I've had the most wonderful, fantastic, robust, good health all my broadcasting life.

"It's my turn now. Many, many people much worse off. Thank you for your good wishes."
We wish Gay Byrne all the best in his fight against cancer.
