If you're not familiar with the Bechdel test, it's a system that discovers just how woke your favourite movie is. Created by Alison Bechdel, the Bechdel test uses three simple rules to define it as a feminist text:
Feminism is described as equality between the sexes regardless of race, gender, class, disability, religion or sexuality and test was created to highlight gender inequality in fiction. Ireland, for example, could now be considered a feminist-leaning country. The Bechdel test is now widely used by film critics and institutions.
Also, since the introduction of the Bechdel, two new tests have been introduced. The Vito Russo test, which analyses LGBTQ representations on screen, and Duvernay test which highlights racial inequalities within the text.
As more and more movies begin to pass the Bechdel test, you might be surprised that some of your faves might not be as progressive as you once thought:
