How Not To Kill Each Other And Break-Up During A Long Distance Relationship

So one of you has moved away or went on Erasmus and you don't know how to handle it. This is completely normal. As a result of the lack of physical contact you might be angry or ignoring each other even you still fancy the arse off each other.

All you need is a few pointers and most importantly, to sort out the communication issues you're no doubt having. Here's how not to kill each other and stay together while one of you is away.

1. Skype

This is SO important. Actually being able to see you boyfriend/girlfriend makes such a difference. You won't be missing each other like you normally do with texting, and you can chat more freely.

2. Say when they're pissing you off

Gals, don't be giving him the silent treatment because it will get you nowhere. Say if you're pissed off at them and explain why and try to resolve it, for God's sake.

3. Go over and see them if possible

If it's Europe, mid-week flights during the off-season can be cheap as chips – so book a flight. Seeing them in person will make you forget all the fights and loneliness and make you feel like a couple again.

4. Go on dates when you're home

Hang out and enjoy each other's company. Even if it's as simple as heading to the cinema, it will keep you going during times of loneliness.

5. Learn not to rely on them

Being apart can be a good thing. It'll help you hang out with your mates more and generally learn that it's okay to be alone.

6. Tell them you miss them

Stop trying to be a cool cucumber pretending you don't miss them – be honest. Let them know that although you don't rely on them completely, you're still thinking about them even though they're not physically there.

7. Finally..Listen to them

It's important to listen to the person who's away and know about how they're getting on. Ask them about their housemates, what they do on the daily, nights out – you'll feel more in the loop and won't feel so isolated from their life.

Overall, long-distance relationships are achievable if you both work with each other. Also, it's important to remember that you won't be apart forever and you'll appreciate your relationship so much more when you're back together.
