Dublin Institute of Technology is set to charge students €866 a month for accommodation on its new Grangegorman campus.
According to The Sunday Times, high construction costs are being blamed for the increase in accommodation fees.
The Irish Universities Association said in 2016 that the cost of developing one student bedrooms was €100,000 - a figure which now stands at €140,000.
The new campus which is set to open next year will house more than 2,000 student beds in total.
The announcement has drawn widespread criticism from students who point out that the €866 figure is far more than they expect, and should be expected, to pay for college accommodation. It is yet another symptom of the ongoing issues surrounding exploitative housing costs that pervade the Irish rental market where profits are valued far above human welfare.
