TCD's Summer Break Set To Be Cut Shorter This Year

TCD's Summer Break Set To Be Cut Shorter This Year

It is an undeniable fact that one of the best parts of college is the vast stretch of the year where you have absolutely no college.

Well Trinity College, in their infinite wisdom, have decided that there is such a thing as too much summer, and that their current students are currently overly spoiled with the riches of free-time.

The Vice-Provost Chris Morash (for those of you whose educational institution was designed within the last two centuries, basically the vice-president of the college) sent around an email to students to say that the next academic year, 2018/19, would begin on September 3, two weeks earlier than usual.

The reason for this, contrary to my above allusion of being shameless killjoys, is actually due to a restructuring of the academic year, called the Trinity Education Project. They are essentially looking to redesign the year structure to accommodate more forms of assessment and integrate winter exams into most courses. Now, with this in-depth description, it is I who have become the shameless killjoy.

However, the shortening of the summer break will only effect this year as next year's exam season will also finish earlier meaning that the amount of time off during the summer for every subsequent year would in effect remain the same as it has been.
