Being A Raft Guide In Colorado; 10 Things To Know

UCD graduate, Jennifer Dunne, decided to take to the water on her year out. After hearing magical things about white water rafting in Colorado, she did some research and took to the mountains. If you're thinking about taking this road less travelled, here's 10 things you should know.

- Raft Guides think they are cool. You will also think you are cool. No one who wears crocs is cool.

- There is no shame in being terrified. Just don't let the families in your raft smell your fear.

- When the feral cats in the area drag a full size brown trout under your cabin you will understand the true stench of death.

- Sticky Blocky is the best game in the world for a sunny summer - turns out it's actually called Kubb (Sticky Blocky is a way better name) - make your own http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubb

- You can get fired 4 times in the one argument with your boss and still get asked back at the end of the Summer.

- Streaking through an Interstate Tunnel is both incredibly dangerous and incredibly fun.

- You will get the most unattractive tan lines of your life. Shorts, crocs and a life vest do not a beach beauty make.

- If you flip your raft in training, get stuck in a hole and spend 20 seconds under water you will never fall out of your raft again. EVER.

- If your hands break out in a rash from the rubber handles on the oars and you ask a 60 year old guide for advice and he gives you a cream that works AMAZINGLY well to fix the problem... don't translate the Spanish on the tube or you will find out that it is haemorrhoid cream. Shudder.

- It will be the best summer of your life.
