Can Music Boost Your Workout?

By Davina Smith Nutrition

Picture this…I’m at my laptop working away, the first exquisite chords of ACDC’s Thunderstruck starts to play and tease me on the radio. My head starts to instinctively nod like one of those car bobbing Churchill dog heads and my toes are tapping away to Ah Rah ah Rah Hah a Rah Hah.

With the first of the ‘Thunder’ lyrics, I’m off my chair like a bolt of lightning..excuse the pun. ‘Dancing’ (yes the word dancing is in inverted commas for a reason) around my living room playing air guitar and my head is moving a bit more head banging-like at this stage.  Ok not a pleasant sight if someone walks in on me now but who care as afterwards I feel great and invigorated.

Music as well as being an enjoyment can really have a positive impact on our mood and exercise routine. Even if not going to the gym or doing regular exercise having music on in the background and playing some uplifting tunes can make a difference to your general physical activity. Even having up beat tempo music on doing your general housecleaning can increase the intensity and in turn burn more calories and make it more fun….what ‘fun’ and ‘housekeeping’ in the same sentence!! Yes.

Some good booty-shaking tunes can really make workouts more enjoyable, increase intensity and your motivation. Often I prefer to go for beat and music tempo over the actual meanings of the lyrics. ‘Insomnia’ by Faithless is often blaring in my gaff while I’m vacuuming the staircase. My poor neighbours…’ Ahhhhhh Insomnia is on again..Davina must be vacuuming’

This week update your workout playlist with what takes your fancy. It will boost the intensity of your workouts or general physical activities and make them feel easier at the same time.

Have a review of this article for some ideas and ermmm you may throw on some lycra :)

Okay I think I was more like ACDC’s Brian Johnson than one of the girls in Eric Prydz ‘Call on Me’ video.

In the meantime dust down your air guitar and enjoy…everybody now...Ah Rah ah Rah Hah a Rah Hah
