Facebook Introduces The Hashtag

Without much a bang or even much of a mention, Facebook rolled out the use of Hashtags to a small number of users last night with the intent to roll out to more and more users over the coming weeks and months.

The social network wants to make it easier for users to find content already on Facebook, and functional hashtags are the first step. According to Facebook, many users already post hashtags anyway, so why not make them work. Hashtags will be both clickable and searchable, so, for example, topics like #CollegeTimes and #CreepoftheWeek will now redirect you to all of our previous content and posts.

Obviously the hashtag as we know and love/loath it today was the concept of Twitter founder Chris Messina, with its use as a tool for organising tweets by trending topics being adopted by various other social mediums such as Flickr and the Facebook owned Instagram.
