11 Ways To Tell If You're A Terrible Roommate

11 Ways To Tell If You're A Terrible Roommate

At some point, the majority of us will be 'lucky' enough to get to live with our friends during college. But, it's not all sunshine and roses all the time. When your friends become your roommates, they can become your frenemies. It's a real test of your relationship! Here's a few samples of what bad roommates do:

 1) You Never Clean Up After Yourself

Living with a dirty housemate is no good for anyone. Finding a big pile of dishes or leftover takeaway rubbish all over the kitchen when you get home from college just ruins someone’s day. If you’re messy, be messy in your own space, please.

2) You Clean Too Much

Ok, I know this is contradictory, but no one wants you cleaning up all their stuff. It may look like a mess but we know where everything lives. Coming home to a spick and span house makes us feel guilty. Figure out a rota so nobody has to stress about keeping on top of an imaginary mess.

3) You Never Pay Back Your Roommate For Bills

We’re all struggling students here and love hot showers, heating, binge-watching Netflix and microwave meals, but don’t let us pay for your electricity consumption. Payback is necessary. If you can't cough up the funds, dial back your consumption. Pay us back or learn how to dial it back.

4) You Take Whatever You Want

Although it sits in an open space called the kitchen, the fridge is not communal. Groceries cost money and, surprisingly, that milk isn't going to restock itself. Your meal-planning/ gym-bunny friends won’t appreciate their food going missing. So, do your own shopping, or risk facing the wrath of a hungry, sweaty person.

5) The Toilet Paper Disappears When You're Around

According to the rest of the world, it doesn't take the whole roll to complete your personal business. If you're hemorrhaging toilet paper then think of your roomies, it's THE essential whose sole purpose is nobody's business but your own. Replace it or face an awkward sit-down chat.

6) There’s Always Weird Noises Coming From Your Room

Waking up in the middle of the night to ‘strange’ noises is uncomfortable for anyone. We don't want an insight into your personal life, thank you very much.

7) You Somehow Accumulate Every Glass Or Cup In The House In Your Room

Mouldy cups and dodgy remnants of some weird cocktail aren’t something we want to be cleaning from your room. If you want to eat or drink in your room, at least bring them back to the kitchen before they all disappear into the land of mould.

8) You’re Constantly Telling Us What To Do!

We all moved out to get away from our parents, we don’t want to hear how you feel about having our feet on the table.

9) Are You A Ghost?

We may all get on each other’s nerves, but spending time with your roommates is what makes it worth north of €600 a month. Spending time in your room or disappearing for days on end is weird. We're in this mess together roomie!

10) You Never Lock The Door

We don't care about your late-night escapades but don't leave us vulnerable by suddenly deciding locking up after yourself is a fool's game. We don’t know what’s out there in the middle of the night when you decide we need an open door policy.

11) You Play Terrible Music On A High Level

Stop, I love Britney's back catalogue as much as the next person, but can you please invest in a decent Spotify playlist. I can't spend another morning listening to 'Toxic' or 'I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman'.

If you find that you're doing any more than two of these things, you're lucky your friends haven't called an intervention.
