12 Reasons Why Matilda Is The Greatest Film Of All Time

Released in 1996, nobody realized the impact Matilda would have on our childhood. Originally a Roald Dahl book set in the United Kingdom, the film has become a phenomenon and the book spawned a West end/ Broadway musical. Who remembers the first time they saw Matilda on the big screen and felt that feel good vibe from the film. Spoilers are ahead so if you haven't seen the greatest film of all time then what are you waiting for? Here are 12 reasons why Matilda is the greatest film of all time:

 

1. Matilda is technically a superhero

Her magic powers, her revenge on the evil grownups of Matilda and her superhuman intelligence makes her the best little superhero of all time. Holler for the little girls being superheroes! #Matilda4Pres

 

2. Miss Trunchbull

The most terrifying and grotesque villain of all time, the chokey, and the hammer throw are just two ways that Headmistress "Trunch" likes to punish her students.

3. Bruce Bogtrotter and the Chocolate Cake

The cake scene, probably the most popular scene in Matilda, helped us all get through a difficult time in our lives or to get through Mammy's Sunday roast. All you have to shout is "Bruce, Bruce, Bruce!" and everyone gets it!

4. The One Liners

"...No more Miss Nice Girl!", "Your Mommy is a twit!", "You pissworm!" and "Much too good for children" are just some of the most memorable lines from the film.

5. Reading is fundamental

Who didn't want to own a stack of books after watching Matilda read ever fictional book in existence?  What other films could spawn such a frenzy for a library card and encourage such an ethos on education?! Everyone needed the library assistant Ms. Phelps in their lives.

6. Lavender

Matildas friend, Lavender is the one to punish Miss Trunchbull with the newt in the jug of water. Lavender is a sound friend to Matilda from the get go.

7. Everyone wanted Miss Honey to be their Mam

The glorious Miss Honey was Matilda's ray of light. The kindness she envelopes the children of Trunchem Hall with in comparison to the scorn by the Trunch is everything. Her back story had us all in tears. Miss Honey was The Helps most memorable quote personified: "You is kind. You is smart. You is important". *Tear*.

 8. Danny DeVito

Not only does Danny DeVito play Mr. Wormwood in Matilda but he also narrates the movie and directed it. What else can we add to the hero that is DeVito?

9. We Learnt How To Spell Difficulty

Amanda Thrips pigtails gave us life and she knew how to get the crowd going.

10. The Soundtrack is everything

Send Me On My Way with this amazing feel good soundtrack.

11. Matilda passes the Bechdel Test

The strong female leads who need no man and help each other out makes this film all about equality.  Respect.

12. Matilda taught us life lessons

You make your own family is an important lesson to be learned from the movie. Halfway through the movie, Miss Honey tells Matilda "You were born into a family that doesn't always appreciate you. But one day, things are going to be very different". By the end of Matilda, the pair becomes each other's family... *Sobs uncontrollably*
