10 Things You Should Make The Most Of When You're Young

We're young and hot and the world is our oyster. Yet, many of us would trade the uncertainty of our 20s for the stability of our 30s. Why is that? Each decade of our lives is filled with new and exciting challenges and experiences. So, here you are: 10 ways to take advantage of this time in our lives. Becuase life is precious, people.

1. Taking the stairs

Take a second to really think about this. Someday, no matter how well you take care of your body, you won't be as mobile and dexterous as you are now. I say, skip the elevator whenever you get the chance. You'll get to your destination well before everyone else (because time is of the essence!) and you'll remember to be grateful for having such a wonderful, capable body.

2. Travelling

This is cliche. And I know it's cliche to say it's cliche, but hear me out. Traveling won't be nearly as enjoyable when you're older. Most of your time will be spent worrying about bills and family responsibilities rather than enjoying the moment you're in. And even if you aren't in that kind of situation in your older, you still won't get the same experiences as you can now. Will 50-year-old you be alright sleeping in a crowded van with four other people? In a few decades, will you be alright living off of PB&Js and roman noodles in order to have enough money to tour the Great Wall of China? Even if you say yes now, the real answer is probably no. Travel now while you can afford to be carefree and wild.

3. Sleeping whenever you want to

When you're an adult, you will most likely have a strict, self-enforced bedtime. Sleep will be more of a necessity than a luxury. It will be a reward after a long day. However, when you're young, sleep is more like a hobby. You can do  it whenever you want to. And, if you want to skip sleep every once in a while, you absolutely can.

4. How your body looks

In my opinion, people are the hottest they'll ever be in their 20s. That isn't to say that older people aren't beautiful. Every stage the human body goes through is magnificent and wonderful. But as we get older, our beauty transforms. At this point in our lives, we are sexy as hell. Cherish this.

5. Dating someone your head over heels for even if they're totally wrong for you

Now is the time to experience things. Learn what you like in a relationship. Learn what you don't. But, more than anything, don't be afraid to get your heart broken. Let your guard down. Be vulnerable. And if you get hurt, remember that hearts are more resilient than you realize. Time heals all wounds, and, eventually, you'll be able to love just as fully again - in a different, but just as beautiful way.

6. Absorbing knowledge

Yes, school is important, but to fully revel in your youth, go way beyond that. Ask questions without fear of looking silly. Inquire about people's passions - even if you have no real interest in the topic. Their energy and enthusiasm will be contagious. Go to museums. Read everything you can get your hands on. Learning is a lifelong affair, but doing so when you're young will teach you how to be inquisitive and open.

7. Engaging with people as much as you can

Get a mentor to help you achieve your dreams. Make friends with strangers. Appreciate your family. Through this, you'll realize that material objects mean almost nothing and that experiences are valuable, but the true key to happiness is deep, meaningful connection.

8. Learning to say the word "no"

Sometimes you need to choose you. It's OK to say no to plans, opportunities, relationships, anything. Learn how to say "no" and you'll start living a life that is totally yours. And don't feel guilty about doing that for a damn second.

9. Leaning to say the word "yes"

At the same time, you also need to learn the word "yes." Take chances and look for opportunities. Don't become comfortable. Push yourself, and try things you're afraid of doing. You will live your best life if you learn early on how to balance yes and no in a way that works for you.

10. Changing often and boldly with no fear or regret

Why are we so obsessed with getting things right in our 20s? I say, as long as you're staying safe and listening to your heart, change as frequently as you want. Dye your hair. Use your spare time to try to launch your singing career. And then, go back to the way you used to be if you don't like the direction you're going. It's like the quote says, "Life isn't about finding yourself. It's about creating yourself."
