Retro has never sounded so good. Stephen takes a look at the world of DJ'ing with Get Down Edits.
Room 19, Dublin’s skyrocketing club night is set to entertain Get Down Edits. The Waterford duo's (Darren and Martin) ventures have seen them dabbling in production and DJ’ing, whilst not forgetting the arduous task of managing a record label. Their alliance, which sparked due to their similar interests and complementing styles of composition has been the foundation of their success. This duo's form of Nu-Disco combines a contemporary electronic sound with a mixture of old-school disco, soul and funk.
The late Frankie Knuckles and MK’s seductive deep house sound was inspirational for the duo at the beginning of their career. This, coupled with the allure of DJ’ing, was too appealing for the duo over the course of the 90s when they played Cork’s former hotspot, Sir Henry’s. During their residency they were exposed to some of the most innovative minds, such as Kerri Chandler, impressing him when they laid down a set side by side just a few years ago.
The duo's collaboration with Jay Ru on their edit of Creative Forces’s – ‘It’s So Good’ is a pleasure for the ears. Bass driven, with a host of various percussion flourishes, powerful vocals and stabbing synth lines, it delivers in a truly mesmerising fashion.
When questioned on the demise of the club scene, Darren said “Young people need somewhere to escape from their day-to-day routine and release their energy. It’s 100% about who is on the dance-floor, you build an atmosphere, which creates a good night for those who turn up.” The main objective of the duo is to build a rapport with the audience, adding on to this as you progress through the gig.
Get Down Edit’s music is somewhat reminiscent of Grand Theft Auto’s: Vice City soundtrack, with its sublime funky grooves that contribute to its clear- cut suaveness. ‘Do For Love’ is a seriously funky song that has majestic brass- a perfect strutting song.
The passion of Get Down Edits music is most notably audible by the track ‘Tribute’ however, which is both souldful and funky A steady bass line, joined with a funky beat is complemented by a catchy guitar riff, while not forgetting about the added elegance offered by the brass, which contributes to an overall urbane track.
