How To Get An Internship You Actually Like

How To Get An Internship You Actually Like

Getting an internship will only give you brownie points during or after your time in college.

They can give you real-life working experience, look great on the old CV and can actually land you a big person job. However, lots of the time students have no idea where to even start when it comes to landing an internship. With loads of courses requiring you to actually do an internship it should probably be high on your to-do list.

If you want to know how you can nab yourself an internship, especially one you actually like, read on my children.

1. Find out what field you want to go in

This may seem super obvious, but you don't actually have to do an internship directly related to your college course. (unless of course it's a requirement for your course). There are loads of internships that are looking for skills rather than the 'right' courses so feel free to apply for internships only sort-of related to your course.

2. Join Facebook pages/Twitter accounts

This is surprisingly where loads of great internships are posted. Join pages related to your field with Ireland in the title, follow the brilliant Irish Job Fairy account as well as the sister account The Intern Fairy. You will be guaranteed to hear of a few great internships and sometimes can even talk directly to employers.

3. Sign up for job-finding websites

Websites such as Jobbio and Indeed.ie are where loads of internships get posted. You can attach your CV through your account, which can make applying for jobs not such an arduous task as well as minimising wasted time.

4. Email everyone in existence

If there's a website or a company you would like to intern for ring them up, get their hiring team's/the boss' email and explain your circumstances. Even if they aren't advertising for an internship if you give them a reason to why you'd make a great addition to their team they'll give you their time. Suggest even meeting up for a coffee and show some initiative god dammit.

5. Don't give up

Trying to get an internship can be soul-destroying and can take some time. Keep on trying no matter what, if you've got a great personality and have good grades there's no reason why they shouldn't want to give you some experience – you've got this.
