In America and the rest of the world transgender rights are continually absent or when equality is moved forward it's disrupted by conservative politics. This is the case with one of life's necessities - using the bathroom. Donald Trump doesn't think everyone deserves the right to pee/poo/do whatever they want in a toilet. The infamous President has stated in the past that he would allow famous transgender faces such as Caitlyn Jenner to use Trump Tower's bathrooms but has reportedly decided this wouldn't be the case in Trump's new plan for America.
Sean Spicer, the White House Press secretary, at Tuesday's press conference stated that Trump has "maintained for a long time that this is a states' rights issue and not one for the federal government". This would mean that individual states can implement bans without the authority of the residing government. States such as North Carolina have already implemented bans on gender neutral bathrooms. The Obama administration issued guidelines to schools around the country encouraging transgender students to use bathrooms that they feel represents their gender not their biological gender. States such as Texas took action against such guidelines and have been encouraged by Democratic officials to drop the case or lose investments from multi-billion dollars companies.
It's a terrifying prospect for many trans people. Trans people are already the most marginalised, murdered and attacked group of people in American society so adding being unable to use a public bathroom is the final nail in the coffin. We will have to wait and see what Trump does but it's not looking good guys.
Can't we just let everybody pee in peace? Thank you.
