Frida Kahlo

Affectionately remembered for her unibrow, Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist born in 1907. The Mexican artist mainly painted self portraits and celebrated Mexican culture. She is celebrated by feminists for her depiction of the female form as realistic and undefined by the pressures of beauty trends of the time. Kahlo died in 1954 from life long illnesses caused by a car accident in her teens.

 

  

Rosa Parks

In 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in the coloured section of the bus for a white man after the white section of the bus was full. The moment sparked a ricochet effect with Parks being referred to as "the first lady of civil rights" and became known as the international icon against racial segregation. Parks received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and there's a day celebrated in her memory.

Marie Curie

Curie was born in Poland in 1867. She was a physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research into radioactivity. She is the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. She died from life long illnesses caused by carrying radioactive material on her person for purposes of research.
