30,000 pupils across 320 schools are taking on the challenge to speak nothing but Irish for 24 hours straight. The challenge, called Gaeilge24, is being run by Conradh na Gaeilge today. The challenge seeks to raise money for the promotion of the Irish language.

This is the fifth year of the event and sees schools from across the country taking part. Every student is asked to raise €10/£8 for the charity, hopefully leading to a €300,000.

Speaking to Newstalk, Aodhán Ó Deá, Director of Development with Conradh na Gaeilge said: "Seeing 30,000+ students talking part in Gaeilge24 is a testiment to the rising levels of interest in the Irish language. There are 20% more students taking part this year than in 2015. This shows that young people are becoming more comfortable in using Irish in the daily lives, outside of the classroom.”
