Some of your favourite breakfast options are set to change Cereal giant Kellog's plans to reduce the amount of sugar in three of it's top selling brands. They plan to reduce sugar by between 20 and 40% by the middle of next year.

It plans to cut the amount of sugar in Coco Pops from 30g per 100g to 17g, a 40% reduction. Sugar in Rice Krispies will be cut by 20% and in Rice Krispies Multi-Grain Shapes it will be reduced by 30% per serving.

This will come as good news to parents where statistics have shown that 1 in 5 children in Ireland are either obese or overweight.

Ireland is also number 4 on the list of countries that consume the most sugar with residents intaking on average 96.7 grams of sugar daily.

A spokeswoman for Kellogg's assured consumers that these recipe changes were ten years in planning. She stopped short of revealed the precise changes to each recipe but did comment that Kellogg's had explored different ways of “using flavours and grains to maintain taste while reducing sugar, without using artificial sweeteners”.

The company are also trying to adapt their brands to serve the different dietary trends that are becoming popular. Managing director of Kellogg's Irish division Jim McNeill commented on their commitment to providing healthier food:

We know we have a responsibility to continuously improve the nutrition of our food. We recognise, based on dietary survey data, that people are eating too much sugar throughout the day and that people need more options, such as organic and vegan.
