The EU has issued a directive, new legislation, and laws, in which Irish consumers and retailers will have to abide by. This Saturday, May 20, any products that are not in line with the directive cannot be sold. The changes that will occur because of the directive include:
- A ban on menthol, fruit or vanilla cigarettes and rolling tobacco.
- Minimum unit pack size of 30g for rolling tobacco.
- No misleading labeling such as words like "organic"
- Increased health warnings on each packaging
- Regulation of electronic cigarettes and refill containers
- Further safety testing on electronic cigarettes
- Stricter rules on advertising/sponsorship for electronic cigarettes and refill containers
The new rules will specifically effect menthol smokers and electronic cigarettes. A report from the US on menthol cigarettes stated that menthol encourages youths to smoke and the flavour makes it harder to quit.
Fancy packaging will become a thing of the past. All packs will all have the same opening, shape and colour. The graphic images and warnings will now cover 65% of the packet with several new sets of images to further discourage smoking.
