Yesterday was an incredible day for Irish democracy. The Irish people spoke and said they want change on housing and homelessness. The Sinn Fein surge was the story of the election. One candidate who epitomised the tide of change was Sinn Fein's Galway East candidate Louis O'Hara. O'Hara is doing a Masters in activism and public policy in NUIG and was running in one of the most conservative consistencies in the country.
O'Hara did amazingly well considering he was a relative unknown running in a three seat constituency. He won a total of 9,411 votes. Unfortunately, this was just about 500 votes short of the total he would have needed to get elected. It would have been amazing to have an actual student in the Dáil to speak to the needs of young Irish people. But we're pretty certain this is only the start of O'Hara's political career.
While Louis will be gutted to lose by such a small amount, he can take solace in the knowledge that he attracted a huge cadre of new female fans yesterday.

No doubt O'Hara has a huge future ahead of him in politics.
