The week after a bank holiday is always a bit of a downer but fear not, dear friends! There's new found hope that we may be about to get at least one, if not two, more Irish bank holidays.
While we currently have one of the lowest amounts of bank holidays a year in Europe, if Sinn Féin and the Green Party have their way, we'll be celebrating 13 days off per annum.
Sinn Féin are seeking to make 24 April a public holiday in honour of those who fought in the 1916 Rising, while the Green Party would like to add St Brigid's Day to the list of holidays.
Speaking on Newstalk, Green Party leader, Eamon Ryan, said:
The start of February is filled with significance, marking the first day of Spring and the Celtic festival of Imbolc. Lá Fhéile Bríde is a positive, potent celebration of new beginnings, the turning of the seasons and the cyclical nature of our life on Earth.
Ryan argues that Sinn Féin's April date comes at the time when we're already chockablock with public holidays but sure look, why not have both them?
In terms of the government's attitude towards the ideas, it's hard to know at the moment but Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes has stated in the past that the number of bank holidays in Ireland is simply too low.
Come on Enda, do the right thing!
