How To Pack Light: The Student's Guide To Travelling

So you've decided on that big trip away. All the planning is sorted, your flights are booked, but you have a problem – you have a shit load of stuff to bring.

If your idea of light packing is a 20kg suitcase, you've got another thing coming. Packing light is essential for any sort of backpacking trip. The fact you have to carry your luggage on your back means that packing lightly is a must.

If you're freaking out at the thought of bringing just one piece of luggage, you just need to re-learn the art of packing. We've come up with some great tips that will make the whole experience that little bit easier.

1. Roll all your clothes

This is our top tip. Rolling your clothes can cut down on space by a huge amount. It also means you might be able to pack that extra top you didn't really need to bring – everyone's a winner here.

By really breaking down what you need, you'll find that you won't need, or use, half the stuff you planned to bring.

3. Pack a sarong

This is one of the best items you can pack. A sarong can be used as a skirt, a blanket, a changing room and even a towel. It's so versatile and will take up a minimal space in your bag.

4. Only ever pack 3 pairs of shoes

All you'll ever need is some runners for walking, some sandals for the beach or lazing around, and one fancy pair for nights out. Pack this and you'll be golden.

5. Keep electricals to a minimum

Most hostels and hotels have a hair dryer so maybe give this a miss. Besides, if you're in a tropical climate, your hair will be dry within a few minutes sitting out in the sun.

6. Choose a warm location

For Irish people, this is normally a given. (as we live in the wettest place ever) Warm climates make it significantly easier to pack, as hot locations require light clothing. It means all you'll need is a few pairs of shorts, t-shirts and swimwear and you'll be ready to go.

7. The bigger the bag, the more stuff

It's a fact that is you bring a huge suitcase you will most definitely fill it to the brim. This applies to a small bag too so bring a small bag and you'll bring less stuff – simples.
