Stop Everything: The Princess Diaries 3 Might Actually Be Happening

Remember that 2001 movie that introduced the world to now Oscar winner Anne Hathaway? Now, 16 years since the original The Princess Diaries, Princess Diaries 3 is on the cards.  Yes, kids, there's a good chance the Princess Diaries series is coming back and we're ready to find out what happens to Princess Mia Thermopolis of Genovia.

The Princess Diaries was all about the nerdy and clumsy San Fransicoian Mia (Anne Hathaway) who learns, literally overnight, that her late fathers family is part of a royal dynasty in Europe named Genovia who risk losing their seat of power. Mia's grandmother Queen Clarisse, played by Mary Poppin's actress Julie Andrews, has to train Mia to become a princess, with both hilarious and cringeworthy results.

The original film and its 2004 sequel are directed by Garry Marshall and are based on the best-selling young adult novels by Meg Cabot. Marshall has since died and Cabot has taken the book series in a new direction, focusing on Mia's half sister Olivia.

The news about a third film started to brew last July when Julie Andrews told Buzzfeed that both her and Anne wanted to pay tribute to Marshall who died in July 2016.

I think we might do it in honor of him...Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to.

Now the rumours are becoming reality, speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cabot confirmed there’s interest in going forward with Princess Diaries 3 as a “kind of... tribute” to Marshall. A script for the film, yes a script, does actually exist.

Cabot would not give away any details about the plot for Princess Diaries 3 but had this to say:

I am not allowed to say...I would love to sit and talk about [it], but I can’t. I’m not allowed. But it’s really more following the movie than the books, so if she — the last version I read, she definitely did not find out that she has a biracial younger sister … which I personally would’ve thought was hilarious, but that was not the direction they were going...I think of them as two different universes, like there’s The Princess Diaries universe that I created, which is, you know, amazing, and the Disney universe, that they created, which is equally amazing. And, you know, there’s fans of both, and fans who actually kind of like both of them at the same time.

Cabot is hoping that the Princess Diaries 3 might actually turn into something else that she'd love to see - a musical.

...I hope we have a Broadway musical … obviously, somebody has to write the music and lyrics, and I’m not gonna do that because that’s not where my talents lie...So I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that some day we’re gonna get one of those. That would be so fun.

We have a feeling this is definitely going to happen.

Fans of the series have taken to Twitter to voice their opinion on the possibility of a third part to the franchise:
