Is It Ridiculous That A Donegal Nightclub Is Opening Christmas Night?

A Donegal nightclub is opening at 12.01 on Christmas Night, causing a lot of outrage among some locals.

While alcohol sales are prohibited on Christmas Day, a Donegal nightclub have been granted a license to open at one minute past midnight this year,  much to the annoyance of many locals.

As judge has ruled that the Limelight nightclub in Glenties are free to open at 12.01, with 800 people from outside of Glenties expected to turn up.

Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast this morning, chair of the Glenties community development group, Brian Carr explained that the club had opened in previous years until its licence was revoked in 2012.

[It] has caused a little bit of controversy around the town. There's going to be so many people landing in Glenties on Christmas night... our population will probably treble from 800 people to 1,600 revelers in the town that night. Some of the local residents have a grievance that the judge granted this licence again.

Naturally people are annoyed about the disruption that this might cause but Carr understands that there is plans to try get people to go in a faster fashion that usual once the club finishes:

I think there's some undertaking that the owners will move them on quicker out of town - I think that's one of those reasons the judge granted the licence.

Are locals right to be upset?
