The 2016 Census Has Revealed We're Less Religious And Speak Less Irish

Today the 2016 census has been revealed and has some pretty surprising statistics. There's plenty of boring parts so we though we'll skip to all the exciting bits.

The biggest shock is around religion. 78pc or 3.7 million people declared themselves as Catholic which is down from 84% the year before. However, the interesting part is that the second most popular choice was no religion at 10pc. This means that 468,420 people identify with this.

Another interesting titbit is that 1.76 million people said they were able to speak Irish, but only 73,803 speak as Gaeilge outside of school on a daily basis, which has actually declined since 2011. Other than that, we found out that the single largest foreign nationality is Polish, followed by UK and Lithuania.

Speaking to The Irish Times, CSO senior statistician Deirdre Cullen said, 'The results will provide us with a greater insight and understanding of Ireland today.'

What are your thoughts on some of the stats, let us know in the comments, lads.
